Hoi Nghi Dien Hong: The Roles and Duties of ALL Vietnamese Intellectuals regarding the Situation in Vietnam The Roles and Duties of ALL Vietnamese Intellectuals regarding the Situation in Vietnam ================================================================================ wissai on 11/07/2009 19:21:00 . . . . . . The Roles and Duties of ALL Vietnamese Intellectuals regarding the Situation in Vietnam The title (and the way it is styled) of this mental excursion of mine sums up my view of the situation in Vietnam. I am going to talk about the roles and duties of all Vietnamese intellectuals, no matter where they are—inland or overseas, in prison at the courtesy of Vietnamese Communist party (VCP ) or in the comfort of their homes, regarding the existential crisis facing Vietnam. I am an old-fashioned, conservative guy. I believe in old verities, such as the Confucian roles and duties of intellectuals.. What I have is an understanding that as a self-regarded intellectual, I have not only a role, but also a sacred duty, to act in defense of my country of birth when it is in danger of being swallowed up by its historical enemy. This understanding is shaped by my upbringing steeped in Confucian values. I was taught and I agreed that a society would be harmonious and prosperous if the members act in accordance with their perceived and self-perceived roles. That is to say rulers must act like rulers and that is to provide the security and to protect the welfare of the ruled; the educated class must be the leaders and provide the leadership and examples for the masses to follow. Now let examine the crisis facing Vietnam. We have the rulers--- the VCP and all of its manifestations and apparitions of apparatus of government---who have not provided the security to the land. Instead, they have slavishly ceded to the demands of their patrons, the Chinese who are our historical enemy, and given AWAY our land and sea so that they can cling to power. They also failed to provide protection to the fishermen and the citizens in the highlands when these people were attacked by the Chinese. The current rulers of Vietnam have proven that they have failed in their role as rulers. They have failed in their expected role of providing the security of the land and the protection of the citizens. They have proven that they don’t have any legitimacy to rule. And for that reason, they must be thrown out. Some dissident intellectuals in Vietnam have the courage to stand up and stick their necks out and demand of the change of leadership. These intellectuals have fulfilled their roles and duties. And I salute them. And I concurred with many others that they should be honored and respected, not ridiculed or laughed at. There is nothing unfathomable about their acts. Their acts are clear and transparent. The Viet Cong are not invincible. It does not really matter these intellectuals are now imprisoned for their political views. If more and more intellectuals rise up, without fear, and answer to the call of their conscience and if the intellectuals overseas all support their fellow compatriots at home, the current regime in Vietnam will fall. The regime cannot imprison all of its concerned citizens. Only fear is what holding the people back. The Vietnamese have proven that they could have no fear. They did that in the past against numerous invasions of the Chinese. They did that against the French. They can do that against the inept, money-hungry, deceitful, unpatriotic Viet Cong. Contrary to some individuals who contend that the Vietnamese don’t understand Communism, I beg to differ. Precisely because the Vietnamese people understand Communism too well, there exists a current public voicing of discontent and protest and demand for regime change. They understand that communists are nothing but a bunch of greedy liars who have thoroughly become dehumanized, who don’t care for anybody else but themselves, and they must be resisted to the end. The people in Eastern Europe have thrown out the communists. They also understood Communism too well. I also understand Communism. After visiting Vietnam four times, starting in 1994, I have seen the harmful effects of having the dehumanized Viet Cong in power. They have destroyed the morals of the people, and the educational system, the health care system, and the environment of the land. The longer they are in power, the higher the risk that Vietnam will be a province of China. It is far easier to throw out the Viet Cong than to throw out the Chinese. The educated members of Vietnamese society, privileged sons and daughters of Vietnam, look at Tibet and Xinjang and learn something from history. Rise up and prevent Vietnam from the prospect of being ruled by the Han Chinese. Find the inspiration from those Uighur women who shouted in the face of the Chinese security men, demanding the release of their loved ones. Those Uighur women have no fear and neither should we. The only fear we should have is that one day, unless we act NOW, we will find ourselves the minority---surrounded by a sea of the Han Chinese--- in the land that was used to be ours, the land that was used to be called Vietnam. Long live Vietnam! Wissai July 9, 2009
